Day 34

Day 34 I woke up really having to pee. This always happens when there’s no bathroom around. Evan’s dad was already up and before I could say anything he said there was a bathroom about 1/4 mile down the road on the bike path. Perfect!
After getting back everyone was still sleeping (except Brent who had already left). It was kinda chilly so I packed up quietly and headed out. Brent texted the group and said if you follow the bike path you’ll hit the town Sliverthorne. He was at a McDonald’s where we all met up for the beginning of the day. I have the McDonald’s app and got a free breakfast sandwich. I also figured out the coffee drink I like is a frappe. I ordered an iced something the first time so I ended up drinking two coffees. I was so wired I didn’t wait for anyone and headed out. We were still on our descent and following the blue River. The air was cool and crisp and the Rockies fall in the background. All my pictures don’t do them any justice. The vastness of the west amazes me everytime. I put my GoPro on my helmet and videoed the ride for a while. Unfortunately having the camera on my helmet makes it too heavy and causes it to slip forward. I know I’ve said it before but today was hands down the best day of riding. The weather was perfect. Traffic wasn’t too bad. There was an excellent bike path. The scenery was incredible. It felt like the day was over in no time. With 5 miles left the road took us through this huge canyon. It was any geologist dream to be able to ride through here. I was probably grinning the whole time.

Home for the night was Hot Sulfur Springs. There was a resort with hot springs. There was also a free campground across the street where we met another west bound cyclist – Jeff! We claimed a spot and went over to the hot springs. You didn’t have to spend the night to buy a pass. There were 19 different pools of varying temperatures and minerals. I didn’t have any tolerance for the hotter ones so I mostly stayed on the lower levels. I didn’t have any service but the resort had wifi so I took a break from soaking to FaceTime my parents. My connection wasn’t very good so I couldn’t see them. Soon we realized that the restaurant in town would be closing soon. We hurried over to discover we didn’t make it in time to order. Thankfully Brent had more insight then the rest of the group and got there earlier. He made a good call and ordered everyone cheeseburgers and fries when they called last order. There was a gas station across the street so we grabbed some stuff for breakfast before heading back to the hot springs. This time I went to the magnesium pool. It was completely black. The sign said it was supposed to restore your bones, muscles, and hair. The muscles part sounded great to me. It wasn’t unbearably hot so I sat in the pool for a while. There were some other people there and one of them asked me where I was from. I said Delaware. Because I’m not near the east coast everyone always asks what brings me out west. My bike wasn’t around to hint at my trip so I told them I was biking cross county. I had a lovely conversation with some people from Texas. I can’t think of a better ending to the day. I gave them my blog url but I think I wrote it down wrong. It started getting late so I showered and headed back over to the campground. It was getting cold so I went to bed pretty much right away. Evan’s Dad and brother left today so I get to carry my gear tomorrow. I can’t express how thankful I am to have met the Liu family. They are the kindest, compassionate and unmistakably the most positive people I have ever meant.
